I just read and loved Guardian of the Dead, that's perfect. Book Thief as well I think he'd enjoy. Well, he'll hate me for letting him read it, but that's part of the fun.

Thanks also for the warnings about Le Guin too, I haven't read any of her stuff yet so that's really good to know. I'll probably recommend some of her series/novels rather than just her as an author than.
