Can anyone recommend a good history of Canada? I know next to nothing about the large country which is only about twelve hours' drive from my house, and that just doesn't seem right.

How are you defining "good"? :)

Canada: A People's History was an award-winning (and hugely popular) t.v. series produced by CBC, that eventually got turned into a two-volume book set. I haven't read the books, but I gather they follow the episodes pretty closely. Looks like Amazon's got it.

Will Ferguson's Canadian History for Dummies is a highly readable starting point. It's not perfect by any means, but it's pretty good. Ferguson writes a lot about Canada and knows lots of interesting facts.

Not a book, but I can't resist plugging the excellent Hark A Vagrant by Kate Beaton. It's a collection of mostly historical comics and often features Canadian history.
